Defending champion Garbine Muguruza put up a shoddy performance and crashed out in straight sets against Alison Van Uytvanck while French Open 2018 champion Simona Halep kept her strong form going at Wimbledon 2018 on Thursday.
Muguruza could not hold on to her title and was defeated 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 by Belgium's Uytvanck in the second round.
With the loss, Muguruza suffered the earlier exit of a defending champion at the All England club since Steffi Graf was knocked out in the first round in 1994.
Last year, Muguruza had defeated Venus Williams 7-5, 6-0 to win the ladies' singles.
